Autumn Talk Series at The Old Richmond Town Hall

The RDA are delighted to announce the dates for the upcoming lecture series at Richmond Old Town Hall.

This year’s speakers will be covering a range of issues from mindfulness, use of IT, difficulties with maths, what support you can expect from your child’s school and how to support your child at home. There are 2 talks left.

15th October 7.30pm- 8.30pm Maths - problem solving strategies

Karismath’s visual scaffolding and dynamic imagery plumbs the depths of mathematical concepts seamlessly to make math-learning intuitive and common-sensical. The pedagogy draws upon research on how children’s minds integrate the use of visualisation, numeracy and language to develop number-sense and numerical reasoning.

22nd, 29th Oct and 5th Nov - Half Term

Searching For The Hero In Your Dyslexic Adolescent

Dr. Mortimore has worked with dyslexic students of all ages, provided consultancy, workshops and training across Europe, Africa and India and has developed and established Master’s level courses in SpLD/Dyslexia for several universities. Her books include "Dyslexia and Learning Style: A practitioner's handbook" (2008) and, with Jane Dupree, “ Dyslexia-Friendly Practice in the Secondary Classroom” (2008). She is a Visiting Research Fellow in Inclusion/SpLD/Dyslexia at Bath Spa University.

Coping With Stress in School ... A Mindfulness Approach

Amelia Kidd has been a doctor in the NHS for 25 years,. She was introduced to mindfulness by a friend and did an 8-week MBSR course in 2016. It had a profound effect on her and she decided to train to teach pawsb and dotb with the Mindfulness in Schools Project and is now halfway through the Breathworks training. She teaches mindfulness to yr5/6 in a local primary school and is starting at Great Ormond Street this month teaching mindfulness to current/past patients. Amelia is also a trustee and guide for a charity called Dose of Nature promoting the mental health benefits of engaging with the natural world.

Introducing Technology To Help Dyslexics Achieve

Caroline Bateman brings her professional, and personal dyslexia experience together in this interactive workshop. All three of her children were failing at school until Caroline gave up her career in the IT industry to help them. Inspired by their success, and alarmed that many schools were not utilising basic technology, Caroline started running after-school clubs to help improve attainment. This enabled her to further develop techniques to empower many learners.

Helping Your Dyslexic Child With Their Homework - Katrina Cochran

Katrina has spent 14 years with Dyslexia Action as Principal and Southern Regional Manager. Following that she spent four years with the British Dyslexia Association as Head of Education and Policy. She has just finished writing the new Level 7 course for specialist teachers for the BDA . Katrina is an Associate Trainer and Assessor for the BDA. Katrina has co-written two books on Dyslexia and presented many training sessions and webinars.
